Technical Tours

The technical tour will take place at the following facilities on June 6, 2024, from 08:00 to 18:00.

Technical Tour 1: İBB Odayeri Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility

Odayeri Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility was put into operation in 1997 and received mixed municipal solid waste until 2017. Between 2021 and 2022, the facility generated 210 GWh of electricity from 53 million m3 of methane gas produced. Approximately 50% of the gas produced, which amounted to 106,000 m3 of landfill gas, was methane. The facility was the largest Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility in Europe during its operation.

Technical Tour 2: İBB Kemerburgaz Waste Incineration and Energy Generation Facility

Waste Incineration and Energy Generation Facility was established in 2021. The facility, being the largest Waste Incineration and Energy Generation Facility of Europe, has a daily waste incineration capacity of 3,000 tons, with an installed capacity of 85 MW.

Technical Tour 3: İBB Kemerburgaz Biomethanization Facility

Established in 2021, the Biomethanization Facility in Istanbul processes source-separated organic waste collected at source, converting them into compost and electricity.

Within the facility, organic wastes undergo anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, which is then fed to gas engines to generate 1.4 MWh of electrical energy per hour, effectively preventing the emission of 81,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

Technical Tour 4: İSKİ Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant is a facility with a capacity of 600,000 m3/day serving 2.4 million equivalent population. The sewage sludge generated after biological treatment processes is digested to produce biogas, which is then utilized in cogeneration units via gas engines to generate electricity and heat energy. This enables the facility to meet the majority of its electricity and heat energy needs. To produce biogas from sewage sludge, 6 sludge digestion tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 m3, a height of 42 meters, and a diameter of 25 meters, have been constructed. These sludge digestion tanks are uniquely designed with Egg-Shaped cross-sections to optimize biogas production efficiency.
